What are Manufactured Homes?

Manufactured homes are smart, easy, safe, and highly customizable. But what are they exactly? Are they mass produced in factories? Not exactly. In this blog post, we’ll explore what constitutes a manufactured home.

History

In 1976, mobile homes received a refresh in build quality and size – the manufactured home was born. The HUD code was established at the same time, creating building codes and standards through which companies would build manufactured homes through. These new standards included:

  • Design and construction
  • Strength and durability
  • Transportability
  • Fire resistance
  • Energy efficiency
  • Overall quality
  • Performance standards (Heat, electrical, plumbing, etc.)

Manufacturing

Manufactured homes, unlike site-built homes, are build indoors at a separate location and are then brought on site for assembly. This comes at an advantage. For instance, because modular homes are built inside, you are not hindered by climate or weather when the home is initially made. It’s important to do your research about your home manufacturer, as some companies may not offer the best quality or price. Of course, Modular Homes of the Carolinas has both!

Today’s Perception

Whereas mobile homes can sometimes be unrightfully seen as being linked to poverty and poor build quality, manufactured homes are seen as high-quality luxurious estates. Manufactured homes are also commonly bought through loans, whereas mobile homes are typically financed. A common misperception about manufactured homes is that they all look alike – this is simply not true. These homes have few technical limitations and can be built in a wide range of configurations.
